Backyard birdwatching - for all seasons

Backyard birdwatching is an entertaining project for your home. From young children to aging elders, watching colorful beauties fly into your backyard for some bird food can be an excitement that can continue year round. To begin backyard birdwatching is fairly inexpensive and does not require much extra work to keep it going.

I do recommend that getting some attractive bird food with a fun bird feeder will help to lure in some locals. This is a pretty inexpensive start up and will help you figure out what types of birds enjoy your backyard. Once you are familiar with what comes to your yard, you can invest in bird houses, bird baths and the other fun items that bring in new birds. Different species of birds have their own unique preference of what tastes like "candy" to them. I suggest playing with a few different types of foods to see what types of birds you are able to attract to your yard.

Even some plants and trees you currently have in your backyard may help to bring in some entertaining birds. Birds love sunflower seeds, berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and even certain shrubs. For help on establishing raspberries click here.

The greenhouse advatage

There are many benefits to having a greenhouse in your backyard. One of the first things that come to mind is the ability to extend the growing season in your backyard! In the North you're looking at an additional 2 weeks in the spring and fall where in the south you're more likely to play in a greenhouse year round!

Mother nature can be hard on garden plants and new developing flowers. By using a greenhouse your plants are able to be healthy and happy. Both you and the plants don't need to stress about pounding hail stones, high wind's weakening stems of plants or excess or lack of moisture flooding plants and flowers.

There are even little pop-up greenhouses that protect weak plants that are unable to withstand cold temperatures. Tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, and cantaloupe are all things that have a hard time withstanding cold temperatures during the day or night! For a pop-up greenhouse kit click here

In the greenhouse environment you are the one playing mother nature. In fact, with a little playing around and some experience under your belt you're able to control temperatures, humidity levels, water and fertilizer use as well as having a better handle on catching problem areas much earlier in the game.

Greenhouse kits
are an excellent way to get started providing your friends and family with home grown, healthy and nutritious treats.

Springtime Fever

After a long and cold winter, the fresh smell of life, lush green grass and colorful birds coming back are a wonderful welcome! Spring is such a welcome sight every year. Maybe it's the newness of life or simply just taking a breath of fresh air and knowing it's here to stay!

In the spring when the leaves are just beginning to bud is an excellent time to look over newly planted trees, bushes, and fruit varieties. Don't write them off right away as not making it. Due to differences in budding times, they can take you by surprise from time to time. If for some chance winter was tough and maybe you lacked on the water before winter you may not be as fortunate. But when moisture is plenty and the days are still cool it would be an excellent time to replace the stock that was not fortunate enough to make it through the winter. For help in cleaning up branches click here.

Lawns can oftentimes benefit from aeration and some spring fertilizer early in the spring. You would be amazed at how your patchy winter killed yard will pick up after you run through it with a rake and give it some tender loving care. If in doubt, it wouldn't hurt to spread some new grass seeds. Just remember to keep the soil moist and you'll have a beautiful lawn before long with common spring rains and cool evenings. It's also suggested that if you missed controlling weeds in your yard last fall, you can apply chemicals this spring, but do it early before you're drifting and killing your gorgeous spring flowers! How are you going to decorate your landscape? Need ideas?

Spring in the air not only brings life to the outdoors, but it's also time to take a fresh look at creating memories of the upcoming summer. Don't forget to take lots of pictures, have friends and family over, and enjoy your backyard setting no matter how large or small it really is!
